Mars Combustion May 31 – Sept. 17
The heat begins to rise in June as Mars moves into combustion for the summer (close to the Sun). Its exact degree of combustion occurs in the sign Cancer (its sign of debilitation) in July (more on this transit next month).
What do we get when the planet of courage moves into the intense glare of the Sun – while weakly placed?
Well, we feel the heat, the inspiration to do something, and yet things are not so easily achieved.
Privately, this offers great strides forward: by moving inward. This makes us intensely aware of our weaknesses, which leads to a sharp desire to do something about it.
In Ayurveda, the aggravation of pitta dosha (the fire humour) begins with its accumulation in spring, before it becomes aggravated in summer.
Mars’ signs, Aries and Scorpio will feel the burn more so. Scorpio has Saturn in its sign during most of Mars’ combustion, and those with the sign prominent are unlikely to act as rashly as Mars’ combustion suggests. Both Aries and Scorpio will feel frustrated if they try to push things ahead too soon. They will need to slow down and take some time out this summer.
Mars is in Gemini from May 26 to July 11, where we must therefore be aware of petty annoyances and trivial arguments. If frustrations are left unchecked, they will build up to explosive events later in the month; once Mars moves into the lunar sign, Ardra. As long as we are conscious of the building frustrations, we can dissuade much of the unnecessary outbursts by keeping our cool - figuratively and literally.
Mars initially exchanges signs with Mercury in Aries, and both are strengthened by the exchange, but only for the first couple of days of June.
After that, we must count to ten before saying, or doing, something we may later regret.
Venus in Aries May 31 – June 29
Venus moves out of a long transit in Pisces on May 31; transiting Aries all of June. This leads to a less-than-optimal relating style, as we are no longer afforded the pure sweetness of Venus in Pisces. Instead, we get the bitterness of Mars mixed in.
Venus transits Uranus at the beginning of Aries, and we experience a jolt in our relationships, values and finances.
Mars is moving through Gemini during the transit of Venus, with Mercury moving into Taurus by June 3, giving Mercury the final say. What we say has a profound effect on outcomes, whether it's the things we say to ourselves through mental chatter, or in conversation.
Passions run high all month, with a need to find a balanced expression.
Mercury in Taurus June 3 – 18
Mercury is in combustion along with Mars in June - from June 9 until July 3 - but this is a regular occurrence for Mercury. Mercury is moving towards Gemini while in combustion, and hurriedly so, making for a fast paced month; creating a speedy communicative environment.
Yes, of course, actions speak louder than words, but words themselves can have a profound effect on our actions in the first place. We must make sure that we are speaking with kindness.
While in Taurus, Mercury can channel Venus to soften the tone.
Jupiter Stations Direct June 9
Jupiter halts its backtracking in Virgo, putting a halt to all of the review in an intensely analytical sign. Enough of the review and backtracking, finding fault and looking for opportunities lost. Jupiter is not ideally suited to the finer details represented by Virgo, preferring instead the philosophical Sagittarius and the mystical Pisces.
In Virgo, we are slowed down by red tape and too much information – a paralysis by analysis!
Once Jupiter begins to move direct, we can now move forward with newfound insights into the daily workings of our lives.
Jupiter is influenced by all three ‘malefics’, Rahu, Saturn and Mars, while stationing in June. This leads to an intense scrutiny of the beliefs we hold, and the hopes we have of improving our lives in any meaningful sort of way.
Full Moon in Scorpio June 9
The full Moon in Scorpio contrasts our practical concerns with a need to reach further into our psyche; to reveal hidden depths that we may, at other times, neglect. This may take the form of a practice which gives us the courage to move past our fears, but it may just as easily fuel our worries, giving them more juice.
Once we are aware of the Scorpio Moon, we can find a balance between our deepest fears and our ability to have all of our basic needs met, and, from there, reach into the dark corners of our minds to more safely process these feelings.
A full belly is a better backdrop to thinking about things which would ordinarily pose too much of a threat. If we are fortunate enough to have our basic needs met - food, shelter and support – we can think of the worst-case-scenario, while staying firmly rooted in our present reality.
Sun in Gemini June 14 – July 15
The Sun in Gemini represents a time of year we engage with others in fun activities. We travel around and socialize at this time of year, more than any other. It’s festival season!
This year, Saturn in Sagittarius is exactly opposite to the Sun as it enters the sign on June 14/15. This brings about a power struggle between our need to have fun, and more pressing concerns that express something more long-term and meaningful.
You may be on one side of the equation or the other, depending on your own course in life. A balance of both may look something like this: find your interests and enjoy time spent with others, while leaving time to ponder the bigger picture, and how this picture influences your current choices.
Neptune Retrograde June 16 – Nov. 22
Neptune stations retrograde in June, blurring and refocusing the picture. By doing so, we question what is real, while reviewing what we find to be unreal.
Neptune in Aquarius blurs the boundaries of truth, with humanitarian issues being one of the blurred pictures.
While Neptune turns back, Saturn re-turns to Scorpio, and we are brought back to deal with our hidden fears over a blurring of boundaries.
Extreme confusion leads to its opposite: clarity - eventually.
Mercury in Gemini June 18 – July 2
Mercury quickly moves into Gemini by the end of June, and we are more capable of turning a clever phrase and engaging in witty conversation over the dinner table - or the barbeque!
Mercury in Gemini is right at home playing games, having jokes, and generally having a fun time.
Saturn looks on from Sagittarius, like a cold breeze moving us back indoors, away from the party, creating a niggling feeling of doubt about the meaning behind it all.
Mercury is in complete combustion by the Solstice on June 21, creating an intense scrutiny on our thoughts and speech.
Solstice June 21
The Sun is at its peak for the northern hemisphere on June 21, as we reach the longest day of the year. As always, the Sun’s transition through the year is marked by highs and lows, as well as moments of balance at the equinoxes.
The Solstice represents an extreme in the year, whether the summer or winter Solstice is relevant for your location. If we are to adhere to the natural world, we must pay attention to the shift and take pause to re-orientate ourselves.
The re-orientation occurs at 05.24 GMT on June 21, as the Sun halts its northerly course for those of us on the northern hemisphere.
Mercury is in exact combustion, as the Sun and Mercury prepare to move into the lunar sign, Ardra after the Solstice, joining Mars already transiting there. This creates a volatile mix of planetary transits, in a sign that is symbolized by storms - emotional and literal ones.
This intensity can bring clarity, like a storm that clears the air. And while storms build up and release, we can always turn our attention to a sense of Oneness, to connect with life in all of its manifestations.
Om Ghrini Surya Aditya
The above Sanskrit mantra is for the sun, Surya. An Ghrian means ‘the sun’ in the Irish language.
Saturn re-enters Scorpio June 21
Saturn returns to Scorpio in June, returning us to the fears that make life feel vulnerable and uncertain. We return to the themes of 2016: those of insecure boundaries – within ourselves and between countries.
One of the major boundaries we experience with this transit is our awareness of death. This may not necessarily be through those close to us, but perhaps through those we think we know i.e., famous people.
Either way, our awareness will be set on all sorts of boundaries in the summer of 2017, creating more tensions between nations, as well as more worry over dwindling resources in the world. This also brings back with it more scandals of various kinds.
Saturn is in a difficult relationship with Mars as soon as it re-enters Scorpio, and this continues right through October. Mars is debilitated in July/August and then moves into a tense relationship with Saturn from the end of August and into October.
Saturn and Rahu in Gandanta (changing signs)
Things begin to shift around in June, with Saturn preparing to return to Scorpio, and the nodes preparing to move signs in August/September, with the north node (and Saturn’s alter ego) moving into the sensitive juncture between Leo and Cancer in June.
This feels unsteady and uncertain, as the influence of the north node in the powerful sign Leo begins to wane. It’s not going to peter out, however. Instead, it will blow up by the end of the summer, thanks to Mars’ transit across the north node in August, and the eclipse degree in September.
We have seen a lot of hunger for power while the north node has transited through Leo - the world over. Rahu creates the illusion of power, at any rate. It is through Saturn, Rahu’s voice of reality, that we experience the very real results. Saturn's influence on Rahu in Leo shows a need to be responsible and committed to these powerful urges.
New Moon in Gemini June 24
The Moon reaches the Sun in the lunar sign Ardra by the end of June, alongside Mars and Mercury. With so many lining up in a sign that is symbolized by a tear drop, we can expect tears to be shed, and storms of various kinds to take place around the world.
June is, of course, the beginning of ‘hurricane season’. Travel plans can be affected, so plan your itinerary carefully throughout all of June, particularly for this new moon phase in Gemini.
Fear around travel will be evident, but with a need to spread our wings all the same.
Venus enters Taurus June 29
We have a reprieve in the summer in the form of Venus in Taurus. While other, more intense, transits continue we are afforded some comfort as Venus moves through its earthy sign by the end of June (more on this transit next month).
Venus is perhaps better positioned now than it has been all year: no longer reaching for lofty heights or bogged down in details. It can simply allow us to enjoy all the easy living in the summer months.
Can we simply enjoy the riches the summer has to offer in the form of good food, good company and familiar surroundings?
Yes, of course we can, and must, as Venus in Taurus represents our need to balance the harsh realities of life, with time spent in nature, and familiar, safe environments.
