Aquarius is the natural 11th sign of the zodiac, representing our goals, gains, groups of people, and networks, including friends, associates, and society in general. With that in mind, I invited patrons of Timeline Astrology to contribute their thoughts about Jupiter’s transit in Aquarius in 2021 and 2022. An astrology think-tank if you will.
Aquarius is the most unusual and paradoxical sign. It is ruled by the orthodox Saturn, representing the masses, but also the unconventional Rahu, the northern lunar node, which refuses to conform to the status quo. It’s an air sign, the chief characteristic being movement and free thinking. But it’s a fixed sign. How do you fix air? Well, this can be reflected in fixed ideas about how things should be in the future, or an obsessive focus on changing what is. However, it’s a bit like trying to tame the wind!
While the fixed sign Taurus is more suited to being stabilized in this way, represented by the earth element, Aquarius is in direct contrast to this sense of stability. It wants freedom. Something to be mindful of when we see transits either opposing or contrasting (squaring) Jupiter in Aquarius form the signs Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio.
Aquarius is like a scientist obsessing for hours in the lab, trying to solve a complex problem. One day, he or she just happens upon it by ‘accident’. The hours spent obsessing was probably what led to the discovery, of course. We experience the same thing every time we grapple with a problem, only to find the solution when we are stop thinking about it. The fixation has its purpose.
Those with Aquarius prominent are ‘tomorrow’s people’, as my astrology teacher used to say. They are the movers and shakers in our society. They change things for us all, through their innovations and inventions, all geared towards creating a better society, including advancements in science and technology: two key significations of the sign.
But there are many complexities for those with the sign prominent, the first being that it is the natural 11th house, which is the 6th from the 6th, and known as Bādhaka in Indian astrology, showing as many blocks as gains. And just as with Scorpio, another fixed sign that is ruled by one of the lunar nodes (Ketu), Aquarius is all about change and transformation. Yet because these are also both fixed signs, they find it difficult to adjust. One could argue that Aquarius is the most challenging, being ruled by the most ‘malefic’ in Indian astrology; that is, Rahu.
As much as Aquarius is about problems in the present, it is about finding solutions in the future. Those with the sign prominent see solutions where others cannot. These traits are reflected in innovative and insightful Rahu. Rahu is an eclipse, of course, a shadow, and can lead them astray, too. They must adhere to the rulebook of Saturn, so they are not lost in the shadows.
Aquarius is eccentric, bold, and a complete and utter paradox. On the one hand, it promotes community and unity, but on the other, personal freedom and individualism. It’s an air sign and yet its symbol is a water bearer, a hint at the need to contain the ideas that are flowing through the vessel, to have a solid framework for all those innovative ideas.
Aquarius is all about humanity, society, but while those with Aquarius prominent are humanitarian in their approach, they are seen as weird, i.e., they do not subscribe to the general consensus and don’t typically fit into the mainstream. Yet another paradox. But how else are they to create those innovative ideas? They may be ruled by Saturn, representing the common man, but they do not like to conform. Being co-ruled by Rahu, it makes them feel like an outsider.
Those with the sign prominent are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and pushing other people’s buttons many times, too. They are always remembered for the work they do to advance society. Without individuals like them we would not make as much progress, or as quickly.
A good example of this is Abraham Lincoln, who had Aquarius rising in his birth chart. He was certainly a mover and shaker. In his time in office, he abolished slavery (Aquarius represents freedom), bolstered the federal government, and modernized the US economy. Lincoln was a free thinker and ahead of his time, as all Aquarius individuals are.
Abraham Lincoln was born on Feb 12, 1809 at 06.54 in Hodgenville, Kentucky, USA.

Abraham Lincoln was born on Feb 12, 1809 at 06.54 in Hodgenville, Kentucky, USA.
Lincoln was a religious sceptic when younger. This would not have gone down well with the orthodoxy of the time. Aquarius is not about religion. That is the domain of the following sign Pisces. Jupiter had just moved into Pisces when he was born. While Aquarius doubts and questions everything and everyone, Jupiter’s position in Pisces would have shown his religious beliefs.
But Rahu, his ruler, the innovator, is placed in the 9th house of religion, too, reflecting his unconventional approach. Although he was a religious sceptic, he was able to quote the Bible. This shows the obsessive quality of Rahu that can also lose perspective.
The doubts those with Aquarius prominent harbour, the ‘imposter syndrome’ they are apt to experience, is what propels them further than they would otherwise, challenging themselves and everyone around them in the process.
Lincoln is quoted as stating the following: “The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot do so well, for themselves, in their separate and individual capacities.” This sums up the role of Aquarius.
So, what has Abraham Lincoln got to do with Jupiter’s upcoming transit in Aquarius? Isn’t Aquarius all about the future? Yes, of course, but this must include learning from the past - so we can better move forward.
Jupiter’s transit in Aquarius will likely bring up the issue of questioning the current scientific view. Aquarius is all about doubting the commonly-held view, so we can progress. Ultimately, Jupiter in Aquarius will likely be about developing faith in the science, in the numbers. This is the paradox of the sign: doubts give us a sense of needing to find out the truth. There is no blind faith here, only a rigorous scientific reasoning.
Another historical figure that has something to teach us about Aquarius, particularly Jupiter in Aquarius, is Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci was born when Jupiter was transiting the sign, and I need not remind you of his contribution to society or his many inventions. He was a painter, architect, inventor, and scientist. His natural genius crossed so many disciplines that he epitomized the term ‘Renaissance man’ and is why he has something important to teach us in our modern era, as we look to a possible Renaissance 2.0.
Leonardo da Vinci was born on Apr 14, 1452 Jul. Cal. (23 Apr 1452 Greg. Cal.) at 21:40 in Vinci, Italy.

Another who has something important to teach us about Jupiter in Aquarius is physicist and chemist Marie Curie. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the first and the only woman to win it twice, in two scientific fields.
Curie may have been a pioneer in science; however, she has something to teach us about personal sacrifices for the sake of a cause. While her discovery of radioactivity ultimately led to treatments for cancer, her own health suffered due to her exposure to radium. She may have been a pioneer in science, but she lacked a personal awareness or its effect on those closest to her. This is often a case with those with Aquarius prominent.
Personally, she was treated as an outsider, and a libertine (Aquarius is not a Godly sign), and even a threat to French family for having an affair with a married man. But her contributions to humanity is what lives on, as her personal challenges fade into the background.
Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1867 at 12.00 pm in Warsaw, Poland.
As we venture forth and begin to build our new society, Jupiter in Aquarius will teach us something important about the values we hold around groups of people. Jupiter rules the 2nd and 11th houses from Aquarius, Pisces, and Sagittarius, which is what makes Aquarius value (2nd house) groups of people (11th house) more so, and why we will probably be focused on these in the coming year.
Jupiter will transit sidereal Aquarius from April 5, 2021 to April 13, 2022, except for a brief return to Capricorn from September 14 to November 20, 2021.
Kristy Cohen writes about what we might expect:
It seems we are all holding our breath waiting for April 5, 2021, when the great benefic Jupiter finally moves into the constellation Aquarius to save the day. So many hopes and dreams await lift off. But can one planet’s influence bring about dramatic change and release us form the bonds of Saturn’s grounding influence in Capricorn?
Life is never that easy, especially in this post Covid era. This does bring the sign of Aquarius front and centre in our minds, however, the natural 11th house which focuses on our hopes for the future. Aquarius sits opposite Leo, the sign that encourages self-interest, which we may have to put on hold and think about in the context of the larger group.
Jupiter’s influence brings wisdom and encouragement for growth. It shows the beliefs that create the world around us. As it moves into a fixed air sign, we get what may seem like opposing energies. Air is social, likes to exchange and discuss ideas, but fixed air is not an easy one to convince!
The expansive Jupiter will impose higher principles, but it may be time let go of personal opinions and beliefs that we are willing to fight for and the hopelessness we felt this past year with Jupiter moving through the reality bites Capricorn.
I believe Jupiter will call upon us all to ask, not what can humanity do for you, but what can we do for humanity. How can we build a better future for society in which all people matter and benefit from a society that is ‘for the people by the people’? How do we get there from here? Bridging the gap takes a village of people – and a ‘stellium’ of planets - who all have a part to play.
Since January 2021, planets have been breaking free form Saturn’s ring.
Let us take a look at the Nodes and Jupiter’s relationship to gain a sense of where this is all going. Imagine any horoscope and put your finger on the house of Aquarius. Now move your finger to the house of Pisces, that puts Jupiter one house behind Pisces and three houses away from Sagittarius the other house it rules in the Zodiac.
From Sagittarius, we get a 3-11 alignment, which brings to mind a friendly energy, expanding our social circle to include more action in and around our immediate environment, our neighbours, and familiar places, but also wider circles of groups and friends which Jupiter will expand upon in Aquarius.
From Pisces, the energy is less obvious, and we may find that if we do hold on to selfish interests our dreams may slip by at the cost of what is best for the group. The 2-12 relationship can be a drag or drain both financially and emotionally unless we are feeling charitable.
We can take this a step further and consider how the nodes will match up with Jupiter. Are they working for or against one another? Rahu sits four signs away in another fixed sign, holding on strongly to what is his in materially minded Taurus, and Ketu, the great liberator, sits ten away in the sign Scorpio, encouraging release, which could get emotionally messy in public view.
If you are getting the picture that a 4-10 alignment holds a lot of tension you would be correct. There are so many ways that this will play out on the world’s stages, but we must think about the reactions the planets stir in us, as they urge us towards our personal evolution and the part we play in the bigger pot.
As we await Jupiter’s ingress into Aquarius, poised on the edge of what awaits, it represents an opportunity to ‘hold space’ (Kumbhaka) for what is possible in the future, as new ideas and innovations spring up in our mind’s eye. Perhaps we can listen to each other more to find solutions. And while I do not believe this transit alone will solve all our current problems – there are other transits to consider, including Saturn’s continued conjunction with Pluto in Capricorn – it can at least offer us a new perspective.
While Aquarius is not as ‘dark’ for Jupiter as Capricorn is, it is not a ‘light’ as Pisces, its own sign. Jupiter in Aquarius could be likened to a twilight period, a magical time when things start to change, and everything hangs in the balance. Jupiter’s initial transit in Aquarius may be a new Dawn, as darkness leads way to a new light, but it must return to Capricorn from mid-September to the end of November, representing a return to a darkness in some respect. Twilight captures the sense that things are changing but are not yet fully formed in the light of day.
By seeing and connecting to each other in some form again, whatever form that takes, we can begin to heal our society – and change it into something else. We can view this in the symbolism of the water-bearer, holding the vessel for the transmutation of what is into something else. We can get more organized in groups during Jupiter’s transit. This may express itself as more organized rule-breaking, of course, as well as more grass roots movements. We must take whatever has been stuck in Capricorn, change it in Aquarius, and release it into Pisces, for an altogether more hopeful view in 2022.
We must do so while still adhering to the rules, or course, the current restrictions, for example, which will once again become more apparent as Jupiter returns to Capricorn in the autumn of 2021. Whatever plans are instigated in the summer of 2021, these must go through a reappraisal and review through the end of the year. Once Jupiter returns to Aquarius in November, we will be in a better position to move forward with any new plans, I imagine.
Penny Sadler writes about what she hopes Jupiter in Aquarius will bring:
I would expect Jupiter would bring more opportunities of all kinds to everyone, but especially those things ruled by Aquarius. Perhaps space travel will become a reality for consumers this year?
I would hope that with Jupiter moving away from Capricorn the world will also move away from authoritarian type governments and embrace a more humanitarian and democratic way of life.
As soon as Jupiter moved to Dhanistha, (the lunar mansion that bridges Capricorn and Aquarius) I felt better and see some hope for the first time in a year. I think travel will resume, somewhat. At least more than 2020. The vaccine will allow people to do things in groups again, although perhaps in small groups at first.
Aquarius can be rigid, so we may continue to see pushback to the inevitable change that is not always easy. Of course, more movement can spread the virus, but I guess we will learn to live with it eventually.
Kumbha Mela
The Kumbha Mela festival, Kumbha meaning ‘pot’ and Mela meaning ‘meeting’, is celebrated as Jupiter enters Aquarius every twelve years. This is the largest gathering of people on the planet, a reflection of the sign Aquarius, and the planet Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, ruling the element of space, holding space for masses of people to connect to one another through the humanitarian sign Aquarius.
The main festival, held in Haridwar, at the Ganges river, is celebrated once Jupiter ingresses into Aquarius, as Jupiter leaves Capricorn, its sign of debilitation. This alone is something to celebrate, as the planet of growth is no longer depressed.
In the mythological story of The Churning of the Ocean of Milk, the gods needed the demons to help churn the oceans to obtain the elixir of immortality, Amṛta. The story later tells of the Amṛta being spilled from a pitcher while being carried by the celestial bird Garuda (eagle), at three other sites: Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj.
The spilling of Amṛta is not only depicted in the symbol of Aquarius, but also by the Wheel of Fortune Tarot card, as the four fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius: the bull, lion, eagle, and man. Today, Kumbha Mela is celebrated during Jupiter’s transit to each of these signs.
This symbolizes, not only the Vedic myth, but the timing of Kumbha Mela during the transit of Jupiter through the zodiac, and the journey we take to increase our knowledge and wisdom.
Jupiter transits one sign each year, taking twelve years to traverse the entire zodiac. As it returns to Capricorn every twelve years, and we experience the ‘the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’, the Wheel of Fortune reminds us that when we are down, there is only one way we can go; that is, up!
Douglas Gould writes about his wishes for Jupiter in Aquarius:
My wish list is for more education and thinking outside the box. I would also like to see more community engagement, although I do not know what that would look like. This exercise (writing for this group) is one such example. Activism, in general, is another.
Finally, it would be nice if we all took care of ourselves and others better.
Blessed Signs
Jupiter initially transits Dhaniṣṭhā as it enters Aquarius, the lunar mansion split between Capricorn and Aquarius. It moved into Dhaniṣṭhā on March 4, transiting here until May 21, 2021, before briefly moving into Śatabhiṣak. Jupiter returns to Dhaniṣṭhā on July 20, after it begins to retrograde on June 20. Jupiter returns to Śatabhiṣak on January 2, 2022, and until March 2, 2022, at which point Jupiter enters Uttara Bhādrapadā, the bridge between Aquarius and Pisces, the lunar mansion that is associated with Jupiter itself. At this point, we are likely to see a more hopeful expression of Jupiter, after having transited Śatabhiṣak, a lunar mansion which is all about healing, in the summer of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. This will eventually lead to new hope by the time it enters Pisces on April 13, 2022. Practical steps can then follow as Saturn moves into Aquarius in May 2022.
As Jupiter transits Aquarius, it will cast an eye on the other air signs, Gemini, and Libra, as well as the opposite sign Leo, bringing more balance to Libra, a sign that is all about balance, as Saturn continues to cast an eye here also. This should bring more opportunity for socializing in the summer of 2021, less social distancing, until the autumn, at least. Or perhaps some innovative ways of connecting to one another.
Jupiter’s aspect to Gemini is not only a welcome relief for any kind of interaction and travel, but especially for those with the sign Gemini prominent, after so many changes have increased their weariness and sense of uncertainty as Jupiter moved through their 8th house. Jupiter brings with it more certainty and insight, more connection and a deeper sense of comfort and knowing, as it transits their 9th house, aspecting their sign.
Leo receives the all-important sense of connection to others, as Jupiter transits their 7th house of relationships, a connection that may be fraying due to Saturn’s continued transit in their 6th house, fuelling arguments and a need to overcome personal weaknesses. Jupiter will allow them to lick their wounds and repair any damage.
But the main benefits are held for the sign which probably needs it the most in many respects: Aquarius itself. Saturn has been transiting their 12th house of losses, reflecting the possibility of, well, feeling lost. Jupiter’s entry into their sign brings a much needed breath of fresh air, with new possibilities and opportunities. These opportunities should include at least a little more self-assuredness, a more positive future outlook, along with the possibility of more studies and travel, more personal growth; all of which will increase their sense of hope and optimism moving forward.
That is good news for us all, as those Aquarius individuals among us are the game-changers that progress things for everyone.
Jupiter’s transit over a section of the zodiac Saturn will transit subsequently represents the ideas and ideals we initially dream up before we begin the hard work of actualizing them. And while Jupiter’s initial transit to Aquarius is but a preview of what is possible in 2022, it is also a time to set intentions and plan ahead.
In a spiritual sense, Jupiter in Aquarius may be like taking a dip in the holy rivers – albeit figuratively speaking for most of us - to purify and rejuvenate ourselves in higher states of awareness.
For Each Rising and/or Moon Sign
Although we must consider Jupiter’s rulership and relationship to each sign, Jupiter is the most benevolent planet and generally makes things better. It can, of course, makes some things worse, as we have seen in recent times with the spread of a virus. Jupiter is the planet of growth, after all. If it is growing an area of life you would prefer not to grow, such as expenses, as and when Jupiter transits or aspects the 12th house, this can be mitigated if you feel you are overspending.
The signs that generally do better with Jupiter are Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Pisces, as Jupiter rules positive houses for these. Although Jupiter rules positive houses for other signs, it also rules more challenging houses which negates some of the positive effect. Likewise, Jupiter may rule a particularly positive house, so that it negates any negative effects. Leo is a good example, as Jupiter rules the overall negative 8th house, but also the extremely positive 5th house.
Jupiter is best in transit to the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th houses, so when this is added to the above list, the rising and Moon signs that will do best with Jupiter in Aquarius will likely be Aries and Leo. The other signs that will benefit from its transit in Aquarius will likely be Gemini, Libra, and Capricorn, although these signs may not experience as much benevolence as the others.
Jupiter represents purpose and meaning, and does better in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th houses from any house, wherever you are reading it from.
Without the strength of Jupiter, life can seem meaningless. If it is transiting a house which does not support purposefulness, either the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, or 12th houses, it does not mean there is no benefit, only that it may not feel as meaningful - even if it’s a blessing from another perspective.
Taking the example of someone with Aries Moon sign, this is particularly positive, with Jupiter ruling a very positive house (9th house) and transiting a positive house from the Moon (11th house Aquarius). If this same person had the sign Aquarius rising, although there will be a lot of benefits and opportunities, this person will need to be mindful of gaining weight, as the rising sign represents the body, and Jupiter likes to expand!
Finally, Jupiter’s strength in your birth chart must be considered. No matter how beneficial a Jupiter transit might be, if it is not powerful in your horoscope you cannot expect as much growth and benevolence as you would otherwise.
Aries
Jupiter in your 11th house positively impacts earnings and your ability to think outside the box about what is possible in your future. The 11th house is all about gains – of all kinds. Jupiter and gains go hand in hand. Jupiter’s aspect to your 3rd, 5th and 7th houses brings many possibilities for more pleasure and relationships, more creativity and self-expression. Be true to yourself and you will gain all the more!
Taurus
Jupiter in your 10th house impacts your career with a sense of what is possible. While Jupiter’s initial transit into Aquarius is a tentative step towards achieving your goals in life, it is certainly a step in the right direction. Jupiter’s aspect to your 2nd, 4th and 6th houses creates a need for more of a work-life balance.
Gemini
Jupiter in your 9th house aspects your sign, positively impacting your sense of what is right, bringing more hope and optimism. Jupiter aspects your 3rd and 5th houses, increasing your ability to express more positive thoughts, with better interactions with others in general, and especially with any children or in creative projects.
Cancer
Jupiter in your 8th house allows you to focus on what is important for you and a partner, or others in general, granting you the ability to balance your values with what others value. This may even mean receiving something valuable from others. Jupiter aspects your 4th and 12th houses, increasing your need for some alone time, or at least some home time, to reflect on what is important.
Leo
Jupiter in your 7th house brings a breath of fresh air for you personally and in your relationships. This positively impacts your partner, while its aspect to your 11th and 3rd houses increases your need to express yourself more, and connect with others more, including friends and associates who have been missing you of late.
Virgo
Jupiter in your 6th house focuses on work life and health routines, improving these if you are willing to do some work on yourself and your relationships. Jupiter’s aspect to your 2nd, 10th and 12th houses brings a need to focus on work, increasing wealth and assets, which may require an initial increase in spending. This requires a little give and take.
Libra
Jupiter in your 5th house aspects your sign, along with your 9th and 11th houses, bringing with it a sense of more self-assuredness, more creativity and self-expression, and a better relationship with children. If you do not have children, it may bring more playfulness which will increase your creativity, and more of a sense of purpose, too.
Scorpio
Jupiter in your 4th house brings with it the possibility of home improvements and a better home life and sense of happiness overall. Jupiter’s aspect to your 8th, 10th and 12th houses brings with it more need for alone time, although work opportunities may also likely increase. This may be due to a need to settle into a new home or home environment, with work possibly being a part of the new and improved layout.
Sagittarius
Jupiter in your 3rd house reflects a need to travel about and communicate something important. This is a welcome relief, as Jupiter is your ruling planet and is out of depression, making you feel more optimistic and more confidently self-expressive. Jupiter’s aspect to your 7th, 9th and 11th houses improves your relations, as your sense of what is possible gets a much needed boost. You may, however, have to fight for what you want. But with Jupiter in a stronger position, you are up for it!
Capricorn
Jupiter in your 2nd house increases your sense of stability in relation to your wealth and assets. Its aspect to your 6th, 8th, and 10th houses increases work opportunities, which will likely be reflected in more wealth of all kinds. This may also be expressed by you finding better routines which makes you work more efficiently, granting new insights and vision for your future.
Aquarius
Jupiter in your sign brings with it a breath of fresh air that is certainly long overdue. Jupiter will bring many opportunities, in so many areas of your life. Its aspect to your 5th, 7th, and 9th houses will feel more purposeful and directed at creating a better future for you and your partner, with a newfound sense of what is possible.
Pisces
Jupiter in your 12th house may increase your expenses, but at least you have more energy to spend! Jupiter is your ruling planet and is moving out of its depression, offering you a lift. Perhaps that long overdue retreat or vacation is overdue, so you can spend a little time away? Jupiter’s aspect to your 4th, 6th and 8th houses add to a need to change your daily routines, either on retreat or in a foreign country where they do things a little differently. As the saying goes, a change is as good as a rest.
