Full Moon in Ardra Jan. 1/2
The full Moon occurs on New Year’s Day in the lunar sign Ardra, and into the early hours of January 2. This is a stormy and emotional lunar sign and start to 2018. But a storm, whether emotional or meteorological, blows over eventually, leaving us with some clarity.
Venus is opposite with the Sun and Saturn in Sagittarius, as we awake in 2018 to take stock of the damage.
The last full Moon of 2018 is also placed in Ardra (December 22), setting up emotionally charged bookends to the year.
Uranus Stations Direct Jan. 2
The beginning of 2018 sees Uranus station direct at the very beginning of Aries. This is a tentative period of new beginnings as Uranus jolts us awake with new twists and turns to negotiate.
New beginnings are full of possibility and big ideas, but because of Mars’ position in Libra there are others’ needs to take into account.
Wherever you experience Aries is feeling the need to break free from restraint. We see this in the world as countries seeking independence, for example. We are all seeking independence in this area of our lives for many years to come.
Mercury in Sagittarius Jan. 6 - 27
Mercury moves through the sensitive juncture between Scorpio and Sagittarius again in early January. It re-enters the unnerving sign Mula, on January 6, joining Saturn in a sign that unearths certain things so we can move beyond them.
The poisons, the toxic behaviour, and the hidden hindrances to progress continue to be investigated and commented on, as we do the real work of exposing hidden aspects of society.
After the band aid is ripped off, the wounds can heal better.
Venus in Capricorn Jan. 13 - Feb. 6
Venus enters Saturn’s sign on January 13, the day before Makara Sankranti: the Sun’s ingress into Capricorn, heralding a New Year in earnest. Venus is combust and angry, entering Saturn’s sign, while Mars continues to transit alongside Jupiter, exaggerating this fiery, purifying quality.
Saturn's influence on Venus is destructive and detached as it transits the sign Mula. This points to a need to state our case and start our journey to where we need to go; not stick with what feels comfortable.
Sexuality, and its abuses, are one obvious expression of this. After the facts have been uncovered, there comes a time to pay the price.
Sun in Capricorn Jan. 14 - Feb. 12
The Sun shifts into Capricorn by mid-month, marking a new start and transition. This is known as Makara Sankranti, Makara being the Sanskrit name for Capricorn and Sankranti representing any transitional point for the Sun's path.
As the energy is in transition, the day itself is best kept for intentions rather than taking any specific steps. So, mark your calendars, of course, but wait until things settle down in January to make any real strides forward.
Some strides forward are better made inwardly - initially, at least.
Mars in Scorpio Jan. 16 - March 7
Once Mars moves into its own sign by January 16, we can begin to tap into an inner strength we had forgotten we had in recent times. This period is also marked by the new Moon phase in Capricorn, the sign in which Mars becomes exalted for a large part of 2018, and an area of our life that will see a lot of action in the coming months.
Take this time to pause and build your inner reserves, as you begin on your journey to making 2018 a year to find your strength.
New Moon in Capricorn Jan. 17
By January 17, the Sun, Venus and Mars have changed signs and we get a better sense of our route forward in 2018 by this new Moon phase in Capricorn.
There are unexpected detours as always, especially when Ketu's (south node) presence in Capricorn is taken into account. Some things and some people we had counted on will not be coming with us.
Capricorn represents the detachment we need, the inner resolve, to make it to where we know we must go.
Mercury enters Capricorn Jan. 27
Mercury joins the Sun, Venus and Ketu in Capricorn and we focus intently on the plans we have made, and the steps involved in moving forward with these.
The road is long for the things we know are worthwhile. With Mercury entering Capricorn, we begin to talk about the peak we are aiming for.
Full Moon in Cancer Jan. 31
Total Lunar Eclipse
There is a second full Moon in January which is a total lunar eclipse, in Cancer and the lunar sign Ashlesha; a sign represented by a serpent. The Moon joins the north node of the Moon, Rahu, which is also represented by a serpent.
Serpents instill fear, but give us a sense that all we want is beyond these fears. We are intrigued as much as we are frightened by them.
Likewise, we equally fear and want what Rahu represents. So we cannot help but be drawn in by our desires, even when they seem to point to things we would ordinarily run away from.
If we avoid these, we create all kinds of fears, phobias, obsessions and compulsions in the process.
Be mindful of an emotional urgency which could just as easily muddle things for you on the last day of the month.
