“Our need will be the real creator.” - Plato
Saturn re-enters sidereal Aquarius on Jan 17, 2023. Saturn's initial peak into Aquarius in 2022 was merely a hint at the adjustments moving forward. New structures and systems are now likely to enforce bigger changes, building something new out of the wreckage of the old.
Does knowing change is around the corner fill you with fear or excitement? Are they not two sides of the same coin? If you’re feeling fear, why not reframe it in your mind as excitement? If you’re feeling excited, do you think you would benefit from acknowledging any underlying doubt or fear holding you back from achieving your goals?
Goals are certainly to be worked upon with Saturn in Aquarius, through a collective and individual experience of the sign. And while every sign has two sides, this is never more the case than with Aquarius. Rahu is co-ruler alongside Saturn, challenging us to alter our perceptions about what is presented at every turn.
The downside of this is questioning everything and everyone. The upside is questioning everything and everyone!
One signification of Saturn's transit through Aquarius is technological advancement. AI technologies are transforming what is possible. Yet as we have seen in our world thus far, technology is both what saves humanity and what causes so many of our modern-day problems. That's the sign Aquarius in essence. It shows the solutions to problems, but present other problems we hadn't accounted for.
Technological growth is about to take a steep incline. That's good news for many things in our lives, but only if we welcome the advancements and get on board. We must do so quickly, especially professionally, or we risk being left behind in a new systme that doesn't care about our feelings, only our advancement.
We must resist our resistance to change, and well, change!
The above image was captured with Dall-E AI using the prompt words: 'Saturn' and 'Revolution'. Dall-E is just one example of the many new AI platforms that are about to change how we work. Recently, the AI Chatbot called ChatGPT has been making waves, after its release to the public in November 2022. According to the MartechSeries website (Dec 2022): "ChatGPT has demonstrated the ability to ... compose college-level essays in response to a prompt, raising concerns that such technology may probably replace human workers like journalists or programmers."
But can it do the same for astrology? I tried it out and although the prompts for Saturn in Aquarius were pretty generic, it did give me some of what I would say were accurate assessments.
We are beginning a new technological revolution in 2023, it seems. And while there are as many doomsayers as technocrats, AI has already demonstrated itself as being more effective in diagnosing illness when shown scans of patients, with a higher percentage of successful diagnosis than doctors can make. The potential benefits in all spheres of life is endless.
Yet we've already seen its limitations, as well as those who put these technologies in place putting in their own, for fear of how they are being used. ChatGPT can be used to create so many things that its creators have had to dumb it down a bit! This expression is likely to increase once Saturn moves into sidereal Aquarius, with further restrictions, possibly a paywall, put in place to curb its uses. This is, in essence, the problem with Saturn in Aquarius. While advancement is likely, so is the restrictions that are put in place.
For AI-generated astrology interpretation, it's a little more complex. The bots can only go on what interpretations it has been fed thus far, taking its cues from books, articles etc. But it does offer something human beings cannot; that is, it can offer a conglomerate of all information from many (not all) sources without as much bias. It cannot be completely unbiased, as the information it is fed is, but it's at least less bias than a human being.
You have to know how to use it; technology, that is. And that's the rub. Just as with your smartphone, if you use it for what it's good for, that's great. If you allow it to use you, that's not so great. The same can be said of any kind of advancement in our society, which we're likely to see take a huge step forward in 2023.
One way you can use AI and astrology is learning without the need of a teacher or astrologer. As long as you know what to ask a bot, you can get pretty good answers, however generic they may be at this point. And if you don't like the tone of the text, you can prompt it to make it more positive! In this way, it could be a great search engine, instead of searching countless websites for the information you need. The possibilities are endless in all fields of knowledge, and why ChatGPT is blowing up on the internet right now.
One of the problems for astrology and AI is it cannot predict someone's future (yet), beyond predicting disease when shown patients' scans, that is. It's a lot more nuanced for predicting life events. But it's coming...

Śatabhiṣaj: One Hundred Healers
Saturn enters the lunar mansion within sidereal Aquarius called Śatabhiṣaj from Mar 14, 2023. This shows more change, more potentials, but also more confusion. Śatabhiṣaj is where we see many faint stars, no one bright star to guide the way. This is both the strength and weakness of the sign. There are many voices being heard. There is not one clear voice being heard over the many voices being broadcast.
Saturn formed and reformed certain alliances in the previous lunar mansion, Dhaniṣṭhā in 2022, on both sides of an apparent divide. There was the formation of the BRICS nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, while the EU and NATO reinforced its ties. Saturn returns to Dhaniṣṭhā on Oct 15, 2023 for another brief period of reformation until Nov 23, 2023. It then re-enters Śatabhiṣaj on Nov 23, 2023, transiting here until Apr 6, 2024, establishing the changes it first prompted earlier in 2023.
Saturn’s transit in Aquarius may help stabilize changes that are necessary, but it may also destabilize many things we thought were stable. Saturn in Aquarius is likely to bring many advancements in so many areas that it can leave our heads spinning!
Śatabhiṣaj highlights the apparent extremes between inclusivity and exclusivity. While Śatabhiṣaj is ruled by the ‘god of the dark skies’, Varuṇa, Saturn is often referred to as ‘the son of the Sun’. The term ‘dark Sun’ is apt for Saturn’s transit here. While Indra is the ‘chief of the gods’, Varuṇa is the ‘chief of the demons’. Themes of light and dark inevitably play a big part in the zeitgeist in 2023. This may mean some things are taken as an advantage and advancement by one group, yet seen in darker tones by another. The case for and against mass vaccinations is likely to become a point of contention once again, along with technological innovations and how they're used.
While the empty circle may be full of wonder and possibility for some; for others, it may induce fear. Technology is a prime example of this. For some, it's a doorway to a better life. For others, it represents a dystopian future. While technology can bring us together in one way, it can also drive us apart.
Śatabhiṣaj means '100 healers' or '100 demons', depending on how you interpret the word. These juxtapose indications are likely a big theme moving into 2023. We must have many illnesses to have many cures, I guess. These are as likely mental illnesses as anything else. The Vedic god Varuṇa represents the underworld, the darkness of the hidden realms and secrecy, as well as cosmic realms and enlightenment. When the Moon transits Śatabhiṣaj for two and a half days each month, it's a good day for thinking outside the box, healing and travel. But this may also mean travelling somewhere in the mind, to heal. Psychedelics is a good example of this. When Saturn transits here for a whole year, it adds complexity to travel and health concerns. There is the potential for great advancement, giving form to new ideas, but also some philosophical conundrums due to the unforeseen consequences. More regulations are likely.
We're all going to be challenged to think outside the box in 2023, to be open to changes we haven't accounted for. But we must know the rules of the game if we wish to break them, if we wish to channel the more evolved states of Aquarius, the rebel with a cause. This is how science works. We must question the current status so we can move beyond it and progress, not slip back down into fear mode when things seem to progress too quickly.
How else can you/we progress? If you/we are always sticking to the rulebook, nothing is advanced, right?! We're likely to see more and more challenges to the status quo in 2023, but also more challenges to what it's replaced with.
Śatabhiṣaj is what we predominantly think of (consciously, or not) when we think of Aquarius. It’s what makes the sign so complex and unusual. It promotes themes of inclusion, but disentanglement from the group at the same time. It’s all about social issues and society, but also the divisions that exist within society. Saturn transiting here focuses our attention on these issues.
The symbol of the empty circle is appropriate when it comes to the emptiness of a Saturn-type experience. Saturn is particularly powerful within this star sign. It’s said to be in its mulatrikona, or ‘root strength’. The analogy of Saturn being at the office is used by many astrologers. There is no more time for playing around. We must get to work.
The continued strength of the planet of maturity requires a mature response to the inevitable changes taking place on our planet.
Rahu co-rules the sign Aquarius along with Saturn, as well as being associated with Śatabhiṣaj in the planetary cycles. If you experience a Rahu period with your Moon placed in any of the star signs prior to Śatabhiṣaj, themes of healing are likely more relevant for you. Yet this is just as much about mental health as physical.
Saturn’s transit in Rahu's sign shows a need to make concrete changes, for everyone’s benefit. Yet it’s darker themes of fear and suppression are also likely to take a firmer hold in 2023. Apart from the war and economic fallout, as well as possible further restrictions due to viral outbreaks, we're likely to see yet more revolutions in certain parts in the coming years, in Russia, China and the U.S. As I write this (Nov 2022), the people of China are beginning to revolt. The impact this has already had on governmental procedures is likely to embolden the masses all the more.
Saturn and Rahu have at least some things in common. One thing is fear. Another is resistance to change. Yet Aquarius is all about transformation, despite it being a fixed sign. Adding Saturn and Rahu together creates a sort of resisting resistance, i.e., change. See if you can resist your own resistance and make the necessary changes in your personal life. The changes are coming, regardless. It just feels better when you feel you are consciously making the changes that are inevitable at some point.
It's time to put your ideas to work, to actualize whatever you have been tossing about in your head for some time now.
How we each change, and how we each feel about these changes, is an individual experience within a connected/disconnected global context (read a forecast for your sign below).
Varuṇa as the ruler of the Night Sky in Vedic myth may indicate further space exploration, one of the few things that binds us together as a global population.
Saturn in Śatabhiṣaj: Then & Now
The most obvious expression I can think of with Saturn’s transit through the sign of the lord of the oceans, Varuṇa, is restrictions in water usage, ocean clean-ups, water damage and shortages, i.e., storms and droughts. Another potential is water-related disease, as and when floods lead to a lack of proper sanitation.
Saturn slows things down so we can pay attention to them. Oftentimes, it seems to block the indications of the sign. Look the house position of Aquarius to see where you are likely making changes, precisely because of this area not working for you anyone. Acknowledge your need for change and do the responsible thing. The upside of this is you can slowly build something new, whatever is required.
Saturn's transit in Aquarius is likely to show other movements apart from the oceans, the beginning of an upcoming revolution, which I see taking a firmer hold by mid-decade, as soon as Saturn moves into Pisces and meets with Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. Everything that has been put in place to make us safer is likely to dissolve at this point, including any remaining restrictions. This can be good or bad, depending on what it is, and where it is happening.
Saturn’s transit to a lunar mansion and sign that are all about inclusivity, reflected in the many stars (100 stars), may show the formation of humanistic groups that oppose what certain leaders are doing in Leo. This has happened before.
When Saturn was in Aquarius in 1964, there was the Vietnam War and huge protests against America's involvement. We're likely to see more protests and grassroots movements take hold in 2023.
The next time Saturn transited Śatabhiṣaj, in 1994, we saw the release of the first smartphone. This, again, highlights the connection/disconnection themes of the sign. Saturn in Aquarius may show many advancements in one way, but there are always unintended consequences these innovations bring about. As I've heard said of the internet (although I don't recall who said it), "it brings those far away closer, and those close, further away". This gap is likely to become even wider as Saturn transits Aquarius and we see more mind-boggling technological advancements (Apple is due to release their headsets for the metaverse in 2023).
Another example of Saturn entering the air sign Aquarius, symbolized by a water bearer, is an island that is due to disappear in the South Pacific Ocean due to rising water levels is uploading their entire history online. They are uploading all their heritage and scans of their island, so their history is not lost forever.
China had its first internet in 1994, so maybe we will see some developments in the current Chinese context. It has become more obvious that the Chinese people are going to continue to revolt because of further lockdowns and mass surveillance.
In 1994, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) announced a “complete cessation of military operations”. This is noteworthy because of Saturn’s position in Aquarius aspecting both Mars signs, Aries and Scorpio. Mars is the 'god of war. We may see a de-escalation in the current war in Ukraine, perhaps through necessity, but the other side of the coin is always possible, i.e., sudden and dramatic escalation that leads to the need for a ceasefire. There are always two sides to Aquarius.
Other examples of de-escalation during Saturn’s previous transit here in 1994 was Russia and China ‘de-targeting’ their nuclear weapons, and the Russian army leaving Estonia, Germany and Latvia.
In the 1960s, there was an escalation of the Vietnam War and protests in America. Fast-forward to 2023 and there is likely to be more obvious involvement by America in either Ukraine or Taiwan, leading to protests.
In 2023, we may see more underground movements; some of which we will see; some of which are kept hidden from us - for now.
Amazon was founded the last time Saturn was in Aquarius and Śatabhiṣaj, suggesting that major progress in business and technology is likely in 2023. But again, the progress that’s made is often made without considering everyone involved. Saturn may be ruler of Aquarius, but Rahu’s co-rulership means we must always be on our guard for greed.
The other aspect of Saturn in Aquarius, an air-dominant sign, is the potential for more severe storms. Mix up the 'water bearer' Aquarius and the fact that it's an air-dominant sign, and you have the potential for more extreme weather. More extreme, I hear you bawk?! Yes, I'm afraid so. The last time Saturn transited here saw Hurricane John in the U.S., the longest hurricane on record!
Other significant events that occurred with Saturn in Aquarius was The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made it illegal to discriminate against someone based on their race, religion, sex, national origin, or the colours of their skin. 1964 also saw segregation made illegal in public places in the U.S., which then enforced the desegregation of schools and addressed unfair and unequal access to voting and voter registration.
We're likely to see progress with regards transgender rights this time around. Aquarius reflects all kinds of trans issues, be it gender, or even human life. Are we entering an era of transhumanism? Yes, I think the new technologies point to that likelihood.
Another big theme in our current context is a likely repeat of a previous theme when Saturn was here, that is, the 'war on poverty'. This was the unofficial name for legislation first introduced by U.S. President Johnson during his State of the Union address in 1964. This legislation was proposed in response to a national poverty rate of around nineteen percent. Are we about to see the introduction of a Universal Basic Income somewhere in the world? Ireland has already begun testing this for those who work in the arts.
In 1964, America had the Social Security Act which created Medicare and Medicaid. This is yet another reflection of Saturn’s strength in Aquarius and Śatabhiṣaj, the signs of the ‘100 healers’. Yet there are always unintended consequences as a result of progress. And there are always the darker themes at play, including business greed (Rahu), despite the innovations. Actually, the innovations themselves lead to greed, as and when a new patents are sought for new treatments and capitalized on.
Whatever changes are happening in the world around us, we are individually having to change something we thought was fixed in nature.
Aquarius is a fixed sign, despite it being the sign of innovation and evolution. How does that work? It's not easy, but when we channel the more evolved states of the sign, we can stick to the necessary changes.
RESIST RESISTANCE!

For Each Sign
Where might you resist? And how can you resist your resistance to change?
Below is a brief description of just some of the possible expressions of Saturn for each sidereal rising and/or Moon sign.
Aries: You've been through the most change professionally of late, so Saturn will now ask you to dream another dream, and make it real. It's influence on your sign will not let you away with anything unachievable though. Saturn will get you to focus on creative expression and more involvement with others who can help, leaving those who cannot behind. A mantra to repeat often is, 'I get by with a little help from my [true] friends'.
Taurus: Now that Saturn has changed what you thought possible, it's time to start implementing a new action plan. Changes are necessary in anything you do, but more specifically in your career. Your life is likely to take a different direction. It's rare for Saturn to leave as is. There's usually something that must be altered. And there's likely something to sacrifice to get what you want, maybe even changes in where you live and in your relationships.
Gemini: Unexpected changes that likely seemed outside of your control have meant having to be open-minded about what is possible. Saturn's transit to your 9th house may require you to remove anything that is not true for you at this stage. This may be through asking tough questions of others who would guide you, the people you engage with socially or professionally, and how you communicate with these people. The downside of Saturn's transit in your 9th is not trusting anyone or anything. Nothing wrong with asking questions, as long as you are able to listen to the answers, whether you like them or not.
Cancer: Saturn has altered your relationship space so much in the last couple of years that it's now time to look to either separating out what you used to share or strengthening your bonds and jointly-held resources. This will have an impact on what you do in the world, how you express your truth, which will impact your family life. Changes are inevitable in your finances, and what you value, while you go about altering your work and family life.
Leo: Having altered your daily life to make allowances for what you can do, it's now time to alter how you approach others you do things with. Changes in the home are likely as you go about this in a new way, changing what you believe is possible. While this may place pressure on you to change yourself personally, and how you relate to others, the more you can take it on, the better off you, and everyone, will be. If you are not objective about your relationship, Saturn will help with that, possibly by creating an emotional (Moon sign) or physical (rising sign) distance between the two of you. Saturn will pressurize you to be more responsible and more committed to your partner, or walk away. Saturn's strength in Aquarius leans towards the former, but you must be open to the changes regardless.
Virgo: While Saturn in your 5th house may have blocked you from seeing how you can move forward in recent years, the way forward may now be shown, which may include overcoming an obstacle or two. The more you can clear these, be it a debt, a problem at work or in your health routines, the more you can let go of that's no longer needed, and the more effort you can make towards building a new routine. Saturn shows what you are doing everyday, in the results you can see. It's not judging you for what you do, but you get what you put in. If you're thinking negatively, Saturn will let you know by making you feel depressed. This is an opportunity to look at what you think about on a daily basis, and what you can now let go of.
Libra: Once you have changed your home life and what makes you happy, you may now turn your attention to WHO makes you happy. Your relationships, including friends and family, children (if you have any), are all things you are likely focusing on. Think of Saturn as a kind of 'loving detachment', letting them go so you can know who is meant to be in your life. This may include family planning if you are thinking of having children, or letting go of a lover if they are not getting serious like you about them. It may mean letting go of a romantic version of someone who can become a partner, too. This is how relationships evolve. Saturn here can block you seeing a future with someone or doing something if it's not meant for you in the long-term.
Scorpio: Having been asked to change how you get what you want, and how you communicate this to others, it's now time to focus on changing how you live and work. Saturn in the 4th will ask you to take a long, hard look at yourself and what you are doing, dropping anything that is not authentic, so you can build something that makes you happy and productive. That new build begins with changes in your base. If you're not happy, Saturn will show you why, and what needs to be done about it. The same applies to your daily routines and career objectives. If they haven't been realistic, this may be a bit of a come down. If they are, it's time to work on making it happen.
Sagittarius: Saturn may have altered your values, perhaps by challenging you financially or in family situations in recent years. Now it's time to make more effort in communicating what you want, which can help you get what you want. First, you must communicate what that is, to yourself as much as others. It's time to focus on what and who you love, and make it work for you. Some things may need to be sacrificed to get what you want. If you have children, you're likely thinking long and hard about what you are teaching them to value. If you have a way of thinking that is irresponsible and unproductive, Saturn will alter this with a little effort and a lot of surrender.
Capricorn: Saturn's influence has been all about you recently. It may not always have been easy, but it's presence has made itself felt since the beginning of 2020. While it seems odd to be writing about it being all about you for Capricorn, being the sign of service, there has been a need to look after your own needs while doing whatever for whomever. You must now look at what you have to offer, be it financially, or in terms of energy. If you don't continue to feed yourself, in every which way, you won't have anything to give others. Your family and finances are likely to go through changes, as is your home and social life.
Aquarius: You may have felt a little lost in recent years, as Saturn transited your 12th house. Since the beginning of 2020, it's been a time to finish something important in your life, to end some notion you had about who you are. Now it's time to come into your own, to take ownership of who you are and what you do - now that you know who you are not. It's time to communicate clearly what you want from life and others, and make that dream a reality. While sacrifice may be apart of the picture, there is now less thought about what you are sacrificing and more about what you now wish to build anew.
Pisces: If your friends' circle and income have dwindled, it's time to cut your losses and make some adjustments. Saturn's entry into your 12th house of endings is a time to clean the slate and start over. Your family and finances may need a tune up, along with your daily routines. All of these important changes can alter what you see is possible moving forward. Don't just focus on doors that are closing, as others are opening up for you.
