2021 Overview
Revolutionary impulses already begun take a firmer hold in 2021, as Pluto returns to Capricorn, joining Saturn and Jupiter in a square to Mars and Uranus in Aries. This continues to highlight the stark contrast between personal freedoms and the needs of the many. This is especially the case during the first few months, but the whole year has this signature, as Mars moves into an opposition to Saturn and Pluto in the summer, and then back into a square aspect in the autumn.
Pluto joining Saturn in Capricorn shows further restrictions, with incremental releases during the year. All the planets gather on one side of the lunar nodes in January and February, reflecting a complex period of change and uncertainty from the start. This is known as a Kala Sarpa Yoga, the ‘serpent of time’ combination, which offers many innovations and opportunities for radical change.
One of the main themes of the year will likely be that of movement, or the lack thereof, as Saturn enters Shravana lunar mansion in Capricorn. This will likely be expressed in problems with the distribution of vaccines, and information, with people wishing to travel and move about more. This will also likely be expressed in many wishing to make big life changes, to take a completely different path in life.
Another theme of Shravana is education, and the impact restrictive Saturn continues to have, as well as on social life, due to its aspect to Libra. Another is that of conservation orders, alongside a need to reconnect with nature, and to each other, by whatever means necessary. The internet is coming of age, with Saturn returning to where it was 30 years ago during its birth, highlighting advancements online.
One of Shravana’s symbols is three footsteps, relating to ‘the immortal precepts: ‘control, generosity, and attention', and the story of how Vishnu, the god which rules the sign, restored harmony to the universe by taking three giant steps. While many changes take place around the world, there will be many more which take place in private, moving in silence.
Preservation will be to the forefront of our minds, as will a need to return to some sense of order. The Moon is associated with Shravana, suggesting our mental health will be an important feature of the year, while we focus on what’s important, and some sense of restoration, and purification, which continues throughout the year.
Another theme will likely be that of resources, or the lack thereof, as well as the ethical conundrum of a worldwide roll out of a vaccine. The lunar nodes in Taurus and Scorpio show all sorts of challenges in terms of resources in tackling the virus, and the effect this is having on our ability to enjoy life. Disruption of leisure activities and food chains, as well as hoarding of resources, including vaccines, will likely be an expression.
Brexit will likely be a cause of some of these issues, I imagine. Other, more extreme, expressions may be food and water shortages, as well as innovations in the health and financial sectors.
There will likely be another stark contrast all year; between the financial markets, inflated by Jupiter’s initial swift transit through Capricorn, in a trine to the north node in Taurus, and the continued fallout from lockdowns, and the impact this is having on employment for the entire year.
Pluto’s re-entry into Capricorn sees the beginning of real and long-lasting change, one that will forever more change the way we work, travel and live. Saturn's transit in Capricorn alongside Pluto, until January 2023, continues to bring tension to borders and boundaries, indicating major changes to systems that govern us, including big adjustments in governments and banking, bringing with it many more reforms, and a ‘Great Reset’.
January
Venus enters Sagittarius on Jan 3 and creates a Kala Sarpa Yoga, with all planets on one side of the lunar nodes’ axis. This reflects an intense and uncertain start to the year. The nodes are in strong positions, as is Mars in Aries and Saturn in Capricorn. Jupiter moves past Saturn in Capricorn in a somewhat precarious position, but with underlying strengths. Jupiter offers more meaning beyond the more obvious economic struggles.
Mercury enters the party, or perhaps the funeral, in Capricorn on Jan 3, joining Pluto which has also just entered the sign. This means we have six planets in the sign in January, as soon as the Sun moves in on Jan 14. This also means that these planets are in combustion (close to the Sun) and are not visible in our Night sky, further emphasising the need to look within for strength. Where else is there to look when all seems lost in the world?
Capricorn continues to be the big story of the year, following on from 2020. The best of Capricorn does not shirk responsibility, no matter how hard it gets, bringing those who are more able to bear the brunt of it to the fore, giving the ‘Saturn-type’ individuals in our society the acknowledgement they deserve. But Saturn also represents the rebels and revolutionaries, and we are likely to see more and more uprisings and unrest due to the continued restrictions.
Capricorn is all about big business and governments that help keep order, through structures which are imposed upon us, offering us safety, on the one hand, and impositions, on the other. Pluto’s entry into the sign alongside Saturn suggest massive overhauls that will likely leave us feeling the instability. Business concerns continue to trump ethical considerations in 2021, as Jupiter and Saturn continue to transit the sign.
Venus moves into Capricorn by Jan 27, bringing all but Mars into Capricorn from the beginning of the year. Even then, Mars is in a square aspect in Aries and continues to challenge the status quo, rallying against any further restrictions. The Aries-Capricorn dynamic will be very apparent right from the start of the year, probably through more and more people seeking freedom of movement, while governments continue to attempt to crack down.
Mercury swiftly moves through Capricorn, making it to Aquarius by Jan 25. This can only mean one thing: we are due another Mercury retrograde, which begins on Jan 31, as we are asked to stop what we are doing and rethink what we have planned for the year.
February
Mercury re-enters Capricorn on Feb 4, returning us to the drawing board, back to the systems that have been put in place at this stage.
The Sun enters Aquarius on Feb 12, leaving the restriction of Saturn behind somewhat, although not completely as it continues to transit Saturn’s signs. Venus joins the Sun in Aquarius on Feb 20, bringing Venus out of the restriction somewhat and into combustion, which challenges, not just the economic forecasts.
Mars moves into Taurus and out of its square aspect to Capricorn on Feb 21. Mars in Taurus is less antsy than when it transits Aries, bringing our energy back down to earth in more practical action plans, asking us to focus on what we can achieve. Mars joins the north node, Rahu in Taurus, which means we are likely to be blocked in what we want to do, even though we will want it even more at this stage. Rahu increases desire, especially in Taurus, while Mars wishes to externalise these desires in more practical, and sensual, ways. Mars is also a trigger to the eclipses in Taurus and Scorpio, externalising the inner and outer changes that are taking place.
Mercury stations direct in Capricorn on Feb 21, and we can begin to plan and move ahead with things that have up until now held us back.
March
Jupiter enters Dhanistha on Mar 4, the lunar mansion that bridges Capricorn and Aquarius, so we may begin to get a sense of what is to come next month with Jupiter moving into Aquarius. It may just be a thought at this stage before the manifestation is seen later in the summer.
Jupiter is speeding its way through Capricorn through the first few months of the year, which means that laws and policies are likely to be rushed through, all of which will need to be revisited, once Jupiter stations retrograde on the Solstice in June.
Mercury re-enters Aquarius on Mar 11, moving into new territory, allowing us to move forward with more adventurous plans. Mercury is now away from the more restrictive Saturn, although it continues to transit its sign, Aquarius. Aquarius is also ruled by the north node, Rahu, which likes to shake things up and think outside the box. We will be doing the same in March thanks to Mercury in Aquarius.
The Sun enters Pisces on Mar 14, and straight into a strong aspect from Saturn in Capricorn. Saturn represents the people, while the Sun represents the ruling class. Saturn’s aspect to the Sun is likely to spill out onto the streets in protests. The month March gets its name from Mars, after all! Marches of all kinds may be taking place at this time, perhaps in place of spring parades. Either way, people will want to get out onto the streets.
Venus enters Pisces on Mar 16, and while it too receives a strong aspect from Saturn, Venus is exalted in Pisces and wishes for happiness no matter what the circumstances. Even while other challenges remain, Venus in Pisces allows us to enjoy life once more.
Jupiter and Saturn both leave combustion, on Mar 18 and Mar 25, allowing some new form to take shape in our lives, manifesting the inner strengths of reform in our communities, allowing us to clearly see what is important and plan accordingly.
Mercury enters Pisces on Mar 31, dragging down the mood somewhat, through a lack of communication and some confusion.
April
Jupiter leaves its sign of debilitation on Apr 5 and enters Aquarius, heralding some new idea and sense of hope, hopefully readjusting the economy and people’s optimism going forward.
This marks a big transition in the year, one that we will return to in November, as Jupiter is not quite finished with Capricorn just yet. It’s return to Capricorn from mid-September to the end of November will only be a brief reminder of the upsets of the previous winter.
The Sun moves into Aries on Apr 13, marking it as a New Year in many respects, beginning the year that is 2021 in earnest. This is especially the case due to Saturn’s influence on the Sun up to this point, bringing with it some form of restriction. The Sun’s entry into its sign of exaltation brings with it more energy and vitality, and more need for freedom. However, as is the theme of the year, Saturn in Capricorn continues to contrast any sense of freedom and vitality with a need to do the responsible thing. This creates a further tension between government rules and the need for freedom of movement.
Mars moves into Gemini on Apr 13, away from the shadows and uncertainty of the lunar nodes, and into a more playful sign. Although Mars continues to experience the uncertainty of the northern eclipse degree, there are more possibilities at having fun from mid-month, especially once Mercury enters Aries and starts to cooperate with Mars. Mars triggers the eclipse degrees, bringing further advancements in healing.
Mercury joins the Sun in Aries on Apr 16, exchanging signs with Mars in Gemini. This is helpful. Pluto stations retrograde in Capricorn and whatever changes that have begun to reveal themselves are likely to see a major internal review, in both outer systems around the world, and in our own private lives.
May
Mercury moves into Taurus on May 1, followed by Venus on May 3. These planets, in this sign, offer more enjoyment. There may be the possibility of having some unorthodox fun as they join the north node, which may mean online for some, or breaking of the rules for sensual indulgence for others. Hopefully, there are not as many rules to break at this time. Either way, the north node likes to break boundaries, whether personal or national, suggesting this period may bring with it more leisure and travel opportunities. While these may be curtailed to a degree, as is the nature of the north node and eclipse, it can also show some innovations and possibilities we may not see from the outset.
The Sun joins Mercury and Venus in Taurus on May 14, and this begins what will likely be some breakthroughs and innovations in the tourism and arts sectors, leading up to and away from the June eclipse in the sign.
Saturn stations retrograde on May 23, slowing things down, so we can focus on what’s important. Saturn is more interested in what is sustainable and long term, unlike the desires of the north node in Taurus. At least Saturn and the north node are cooperating with each other in the same earth element, fueling innovations and radical change.
There is a full Moon and total lunar eclipse in Scorpio to navigate first, on May 26. This is likely to be an eclipse that leaves many of us feeling raw and exposed, emotionally charged, and vulnerable.
Jupiter moves into Shatabhisak, the lunar mansion in Aquarius, on May 22. Shatabhisak means ‘100 healers’, so it’s transit here, along with the upcoming eclipse in June, suggests further progress in curing the disease that has gripped the world. I mention that to instill hope. Jupiter in Aquarius is after all more hopeful, moving us beyond the fear and restrictions of Capricorn, and into the more innovative sign Aquarius.
Mercury and Venus quickly move into Gemini, on May 26 and May 28, adding further delights and enjoyments, and probably more possibilities of interacting with one another. The only problem: Mercury retrograde, of course! After Mercury has moved swiftly through signs, you can bet we are due a review. And because this review begins in Mrigashirsha, where we experience the upcoming eclipse in June, more details of the treatment for the virus will likely emerge, along with other secrets, as the south node transits the eclipse degree in May.
June
A retrograde Mercury returns to Taurus on Jun 2, as Mars moves into Cancer, its sign of debilitation. Mars is not only in a weak position, but also in an opposition to Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. This begins a tense summer period, with any restrictions boiling over into frustrations, I imagine.
There is an annular solar eclipse on Jun 10 in Taurus, conjunct Mercury retrograde, bringing with it some insights, but also some confusion around the facts. This will likely revolve around the treatment plan for the virus, placed in the lunar mansion, Mrigashirsha, which is ruled by Soma, the cure for what ails us.
While these transits suggest explosive events, let us hope that they can be used to fight the virus, and not each other. Regardless, the June eclipse points to breakthroughs.
The Sun moves into Gemini on Jun 15, while Mars enters combustion and begins to heat things up. This is the beginning of months of Mars in combustion, through December, creating more heated situations, and probably more heat - literally.
Jupiter stations retrograde on the day before the Solstice on Jun 20, allowing us to revaluate the direction our life is taking, the beginning of a process until October that will help us get clearer about what is important.
Venus enters Cancer on Jun 22 and Mercury stations direct on Jun 23, showing further changes at this peak time of year.
July
Neptune stations retrograde on July 1, at the very last degree of Aquarius. It’s as if we almost made it to a new dawn, but the time is not quite right to move on.
Mercury re-enters a strong position in Gemini on Jul 7, away from the uncertainty of the eclipses. The Sun enters Cancer on Jul 16, while Venus enters Leo on Jul 17, crossing the sensitive juncture between Cancer and Leo as it does so. An adjustment is required at this time, possibly in the financial sector, as well as in how we relate to one another.
Mars moves through this juncture by Jul 20, a volatile period, but also a more passionate one, as it joins Venus in Leo. Mercury enters Cancer on Jul 25 and communications take on a more emotional and reactive tone during an intensely hot and passionate summer period.
August
Mercury enters Leo on Aug 8, while Venus moves into Virgo, its sign of debilitation, on Aug 11. This is a weaker period for negotiation.
The Sun enters Leo on Aug 16, and brings with it a strong period, despite Venus’ low mood. These transits may be more conducive to doing the necessary, with Mars and the Sun in strength in the fiery Leo, which may not please everyone, or anyone, else. Everything is good for something, and these fiery transits are good for determined action, with little time for nicety.
Uranus stations retrograde on Aug 20, in Aries, further igniting a fire, but this time, an inner one that further enhances a need to light our way. Mercury enters Virgo on Aug 26, its own sign and place of exaltation, further enhancing strengths, this time, through being able to manage the energy. This also mitigates Venus’ weakness, allowing us to communicate more effectively, despite the apparent lack of consideration.
September
Venus enters Libra on Sep 5, as Mars moves into Virgo, joining Mercury, which is slowing down in transit, in preparation for its upcoming retrograde. This means Mars and Mercury come head-to-head and set something off. September will see a build-up of mental tensions, as the face-off during Mercury’s slow down. One can imagine this is expressed in frustrating delays in getting our schedule in order, as well as those trying to get some sense of order.
Jupiter re-enters Capricorn on Sep 14. This is Jupiter’s sign of debilitation, although mitigated by being retrograde and conjunct Saturn. Thankfully, this is also a brief transit for Jupiter in Capricorn.
The Sun enters Virgo on Sep 16, while its ruler, Mercury enters Libra on the Equinox on Sep 22. Mercury is slow in transit and stations retrograde on Sep 27 in Libra, before returning to Virgo in October.
Mercury’s back and forth between the air and earth signs suggests a lot of re-planning and returning to the drawing board in more practical matters.
October
Mercury re-enters Virgo on Oct 1, and although a place of strength for Mercury, its retrograde transit suggests we will not be able to plan effectively until Mercury has stationed direct later in the month. Mars and Mercury conjoin on Oct 9, sparking something.
Venus enters Scorpio on Oct 2, as Mars comes into exact combustion in Virgo. Venus joins the southern eclipse degree in Scorpio, while Mars is influenced by the northern eclipse degree. This opens up the possibility of change, brought about by fighting for good health, remedying the situation - an explosive period, which offers the potential for breakthroughs.
Pluto stations direct on Oct 6, at the very first degree of Capricorn. Pluto’s station requires us to make bigger changes than we are always willing to but change we must; in how we live and work; in how businesses are run, and structures maintained/altered/removed.
Saturn stations direct in Capricorn on Oct 12, which makes this month feel important in many ways. We can slowly move ahead with long term plans.
The Sun enters Libra on Oct 17, its sign of debilitation, placing our luminary in weakness, with our guiding planet, Jupiter in its weakness. Laws and governing will feel the effects of this around the world, as will our general sense of what is right and who we should listen to.
Jupiter stations direct in Capricorn on Oct 18, gradually moving on from the restrictions of the sign by the end of November. Mercury stations direct, on Oct 19, so the month sees many planets move forward again. Although a slow month overall, at least things are moving in the right direction; that is, forward.
Mars enters Libra on Oct 21, exchanging signs with Venus in Scorpio until Oct 30. This offers more strength, with Mercury also now very strong in Virgo. There is no getting away from Saturn’s ultimate strength in Capricorn, which has a direct impact on Mars in Libra. This time, however, Mars pushes back, and we will probably see this in fighting for what we feel passionate about – that is, freedom.
Venus enters Sagittarius on Oct 30, breaking its passionate exchange with Mars; instead, moving into Jupiter’s sign, while Jupiter finishes the reforms in Capricorn.
November
Mercury re-enters Libra on Nov 2, entering combustion along with Mars, as it catches up with Mars and the Sun. The Sun moves into Scorpio on Nov 16, and out of its debilitation, a welcome return to more trust in the process, and in our leaders. We will need this trust as things begin to change in bigger ways with the upcoming eclipses.
There is a partial lunar eclipse in Taurus on Nov 19, opening up a period of change and uncertainty, a period which culminates in a total solar eclipse in Scorpio, in December. Before that, Jupiter leaves its sign of debilitation, on Nov 20, for once and for all.
December
Neptune stations direct in Aquarius on Dec 2. Mars enters Scorpio on Dec 4, the same day of the new Moon and a total solar eclipse in the sign. This offers more possibilities of overcoming challenges, revealing things that were previously hidden from us, as well as things we felt we could not articulate. All that is about to change, as this total eclipse brings its revelations.
Mars finally leaves its combustion, after much of the year in a state of tension, coming into real and apparent strength for the first since the beginning of the year, as it enters its own sign, Scorpio.
Venus enters Capricorn on Dec 7, while Mercury enters Sagittarius on Dec 10. The Sun enters Sagittarius on Dec 15. Mercury swiftly moves through Sagittarius, entering Capricorn by Dec 29, leaving its combustion, as we plan ahead for the New Year.
