Constitution in the Horoscope
by Gary O'Toole
Excerpt from Cosmic Bodies
To begin the study of constitution in the Vedic birth chart, the first thing to examine is the lagna or ‘rising sign’. This is the sign that was rising (ascending) on the eastern horizon when you were born. It is also known as the ascendant.
The Sanskrit word lagna is often translated as ‘marriage’, which represents the marriage between heaven and earth on the eastern horizon. It represents the space captured on the eastern horizon as the skies met the earth, encapsulating you in your physical body, as you emerged from your mother’s womb.
There are many things to examine in the horoscope to arrive at a conclusion as to a person’s constitution and any imbalances being experienced at any given time. This would involve a static analysis for a constitutional type and a combination of a static and dynamic analysis for any imbalances.
Here the analysis is kept as simple as possible – leaving out many of the elements that can be studied in order to come to a more accurate interpretation. The below is a static analysis, which does not take into account current dasas (planetary cycles) and transits.
Taking a look at the most basic of indications of health and constitution in the horoscope, we must first look to the rising sign and its ruling planet.
Your nature is strongly influenced by these, as well as the rising sign in the 9th divisional chart or D9. Planets that are strongly placed in the natal chart also have an impact on constitution. The planet that rules your rising sign plays the most important role in your overall health and constitution.
