Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light;
I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.
- Sarah Williams, The Old Astronomer to His Pupil
There is a time and reason for everything. Saturn’s time-period shows up as suffering due to the consequences of past thoughts, words and actions which were not advantageous for those on the receiving end of those thoughts, words and actions. We cannot avoid the pain as a result. This can either make or break us. It probably breaks us in order to put us back together again in a more fragile, humble state. Some may not be put back together ever again in the same way. The ego takes a beating in the months and years of a period of Saturn and yet something has to survive in some form to tell the story.
A 'Saturn period' is a clearing out of any unnecessary baggage. It is a cleansing of any pain which has not been felt in the moment. If you have read Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now you may know what I’m referring to. He refers to it as the ‘pain body’. This is a good way to name it and separate ourselves from what is happening. Any emotional baggage is due to be dropped when a Saturn period has ripened in our lives, but we may just be aware of the pain and form a new identity based on it.
The dropping of any defenses in order to release pain may prove to be the ego’s downfall and the soul’s cry to be heard. Saturn teaches us many things, but mostly it teaches us how to let go. The release is never a feeling of completely letting go, although the pain gets lighter and lighter with each cry you allow yourself during a Saturn period.
I have studied many astrology charts over the years of those who were in a Saturn ‘fix’ and wanted a quick way out. I do not know of any quick ways out I’m afraid. I, myself, took all of the advice; the supplements; the lifestyles most suited to Saturn. I spent time on retreats and stayed in hermitages as much as possible. Saturn requires you to spend at least some time alone. And the people in your life will leave you alone when you want to be left alone. Even your good moods are only a front and others will smell it off you. You will end up on your own in some way or another, and at some time or another, in a Saturn period. So, give yourself that time alone and be with the pain. Explain to others that you are going through something. When you hear talk about a person’s period of greatest challenge, there is also a time when it all comes to an end. You are cleared of whatever you needed to clear and you have either let go of it, or it has been pulled out of your grasp. Either way Saturn leaves you feeling lighter and ready to move on by the time it comes to an end.
Exercise when the body is willing and eat foods that keep your head in a good space. Although, during a Saturn period you may come to know negativity very well. If you sink into despair, know that this period of challenges is strengthening something deeper in you while it removes the things which are not meant to stay with you for the long haul. Silence, yoga and meditation help and you may feel at home on your own, enjoying the days spent in silence, or whenever you can take time out for yourself. When we are in the world it just hurts in a Saturn period. If do not spend time alone, or you do not have the natural inclination to spent time in solitude, a Saturn time period can create problems.
In the end there is no quick way out of feeling all that you need to feel, as it passes through you and out of you. It all has to come out and there are no quick incisions. Every bad thought, word and action must be experienced as pain. Saturn makes sure you experience the pain by influencing your thinking and the resulting actions. It is all too easy to go to a negative thought in a Saturn period, and a lot of energy is spent in keeping your mind out of the darkest of places. Those who have a strong stoic nature know how to deal with this pain in their life far better. When they move through such a Saturn period, they simply think more of the harshness of life is to be endured, and get on with it. For those who do not have Saturn influencing their minds as strongly i.e., the Moon in the horoscope, it can be bared with less drama than I am expressing here. Everyone moves through a Saturn period in life of course, and at different times. Just as old age is a natural process, so too is losing something we once called our own. It’s not so difficult for most. It is a cleansing and we all experience loss of course, but most deal with it in a lot more dignified a fashion. However, you may become a little wearier as a result. Hopefully you can understand your weaknesses far better.
Everything has a place and a purpose, you told us.
A viper must be true to his creed.
The fang needs sharpening, the lethal venom a victim,
Come my beloved, lie with me today and always.
No telling if poison and ambrosia are the same,
Unless you savour them both.
So what comes after a Saturn period? Well, Mercury begins to influence the mind once Saturn has done its job. We need to be emptied of all we thought we knew about the world, or ourselves, to be ready to learn something new. We have made room for more, as it were. We have become child-like again, but more weary than a child, because we are no longer innocent. We have been with pain. This child-like Mercurial influence is a feeling that slowly comes into our life experience as Saturn begins to fade, and Mercury’s influence becomes more pronounced. Entering a subsequent Mercury period we will feel the need to come out of the darkness once again. We are now ready to integrate our experience and communicate what we have learned from our limitations.
Ultimately, this points us towards something not of this world. It is something that connects us to a greater sense of self than is tied up with possessions, relationships and status - any attachments you can think of. Although words fail in expressing the profound experience one can have once there is a release of one's grasp to those things which kept us limited in our physical bodies, we turn our attention towards our true essence and are taken out of the world. Sometimes people are literally taken out by a Saturn period, but most often, it is our awareness of something beyond our physical experience which takes us beyond the pain.
