Planets Rising
by Gary O'Toole
Excerpt from Cosmic Bodies
A planet placed in the rising sign will dominate and show the dominant constitution. If there are several planets placed therein, then the strongest will dominate, but all of them will have an impact on your nature.
Sun Rising
The Sun is seen in Ayurveda as balanced pitta if it is well placed in the horoscope. It causes heat in the body that is health promoting, such as a healthy digestive fire. With a strong Sun, there is robust health, whereas a weak Sun will show poor health overall. According to Parasara: 'The Sun has honey coloured eyes, square body, he is of clean habits, is bilious, intelligent, manly and has limited hair on his head.'
Moon Rising
The Moon is either more kapha when waxing or full, or more vata when waning and new. In Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, the sage Parasara describes the Moon as 'very windy and phlegmatic. She has a round body and is learned. She has auspicious looks and sweet speech, is fickle-minded and very lustful.'
Mars Rising
Mars is pitta dosa but unlike the Sun it creates toxic heat. Parasara describes Mars as 'cruel, has blood-red eyes, is fickle-minded, liberal-hearted, bilious and has a thin waist and thin physique'.
Mercury Rising
Mercury is tridoshic; having all three dosas which will be modified by its position and planets influencing. Parasara's description of Mercury is that he 'possesses an attractive physique … He has a blend of all three humours of bile, phlegm and wind.'
Jupiter Rising
Jupiter is kapha dosa and largely balanced. According to Parasara, Jupiter 'is large bodied, has honey coloured eyes and hair, is phlegmatic...'
Venus Rising
Venus is both kapha and vata dosa, showing a beautiful physique if not afflicted or having other stronger planetary influences. Venus, according to Parasara, 'is joyful, charming in physique, has beautiful eyes ... is phlegmatic and windy and has curly hair'.
Saturn Rising
Saturn is vata dosa and creates the most disease. Parasara describes Saturn as having 'an emaciated and long physique, honey coloured eyes, is windy in temperament, has big teeth … lame and coarse, rough hair'.
Rahu Rising
Rahu is vata dosa and toxic in nature. Parasara describes the north node, along with the south node, as having a 'blue body … is windy in temperament'.
Ketu Rising
Ketu is pitta dosa and toxic. Parasara describes the south node in the same way he describes the north node. The south node is usually considered reddish in appearance by most Vedic astrologers because of its association with Mars.
