Over the years, I’ve noted astrologers who use Tropical calculations refer to correlating events when planets transit the end of a Tropical sign. I put this down in part to planets reaching the last 6 degrees of a Tropical sign, thus entering the Sidereal sign of the same name.
But there’s another overlap beyond Sun signs that I’ve noted. Saturn’s change of lunar mansions within Sidereal Aquarius this month reflects its ingress into Tropical Pisces.
Saturn transits between 6° 40' and 20° 00’ of Sidereal Aquarius, where we see the lunar mansion Śatabhiṣaj. Once Saturn has reached the 6-degree mark of Sidereal Aquarius and enters Śatabhiṣaj, it marks the beginning of its transit in Tropical Pisces.
If you’re an astrologer who uses Tropical calculations, you’re currently anticipating Saturn's ingress into Tropical Pisces. If you use Sidereal calculations, you’re anticipating Saturn’s entry into Śatabhiṣaj. The themes are similar.
Śatabhiṣaj and Pisces are both confusing, although one is more conducive (Śatabhiṣaj) than the other (Pisces) to Saturn-type things.
Śatabhiṣaj is associated with Rahu, the north lunar node; ‘Saturn’s alter ego’. If Saturn represents order and containment, Rahu represents chaos and disorder. Yet this is how things progress.
While Saturn continues to transit Sidereal Aquarius, a sign it is said to rule, its transit through Rahu’s lunar mansion brings an opposing quality. It blends together two things that have a hard time co-existing: the past (Saturn) and the future (Rahu).
Both Śatabhiṣaj and Pisces are hard to fathom. Themes of inclusion are prominent, as are issues around exclusion. Saturn brings up problems to be solved. The last time Saturn transited here in the early 90s saw many humanitarian issues and social rights movements. We're likely to see more of the same in the coming year.
Lynn Bell writes the following about Saturn’s transit in her article, Saturn in Pisces - Dissolving Boundaries, much of which reads as if it were written about Saturn’s transit through Śatabhiṣaj:
“Saturn’s passage in this sign is paradoxical. It can dissolve barriers to freedom and redefine our core myths. It can also give rise to fear, leading to redoubled efforts for control, often empowered by a fervent faith that another way of being or living would be preferable.
Saturn in Pisces will prompt us to choose between old stories and new myths. We will decide how to make sense of the changes in our world and engage in the new possibilities of being human” (Bell, 2022).
One of the important significations of Śatabhiṣaj is health and healing, for which Saturn is likely to show regulations and systems put in place to keep things orderly. Healthcare reforms were also a big theme of Saturn's last transit here in the 90s.
The order imposed may also be due to a lack of order, which can then become rigid. Aquarius is as fixed sign, after all. Saturn's inclusion can stress the issues. It's a fixed, air sign, which can express itself as rigid thinking, or thinking that progress can only be made in such and such a way.
Śatabhiṣaj is ruled by Varuṇa, the Vedic god of the oceans. Okay, you can see where I’m going with this! Saturn in Varuṇa’s sign or Pisces? Tomato tomato.
While the oceans of Varuṇa in Śatabhiṣaj reflects the spiritual realms and awakening, it also points to the depths of the problems in our oceans. Saturn’s transit here is likely to bring up more water-related problems, including water contamination, water damage from more intense storms, and water shortages.
Of course, the oceans reflect the sky above. Varuṇa may be the god of the deep oceans, but Aquarius is an air sign. Airborne containments is likely another expression. We have already seen this play out in recent events in Ohio.
The symbol for Śatabhiṣaj is an empty circle. This reflects the confusion that is possible in a sign that represents all possibilities, yet all the contradictory stances and paradoxes contained within. Although we can take confusion to mean, “to fuse with”, and see the potential for unity, there is also likely to be a lot of confusion as a result of Saturn’s transit and the instability it is likely to bring.
Saturn eventually brings back stability, although its route through Śatabhiṣak shows a lot of instability initially.
Another example of this instability is likely because of major storms. The last time Saturn was here in the early 90s saw the longest hurricane on record in the U.S. If nothing else, Saturn in Aquarius is consistent!
We're likely to see more seismic activity as well. Things that collapse are rebuilt better later - hopefully. The things that were built on instable foundations, whether literally or figuratively, show their inability to withstand the shakeup.
Systems are likely to change in a big way as Saturn continues to transit through Sidereal Aquarius, as it enter Tropical Pisces.
Many things will dissolve. Everything will surely evolve.
