The 3 States of the Doshas: Inert, Agitated or Balanced
To understand more of the complexities of each of the humours, we can also see them in relation to each of their three states. These states are known in Sanskrit as Tamas, Rajas and Sattva, and are simply translated here as 'inert', 'agitated' and 'balanced'.
The 3 States of Kapha
When Kapha types are in an inert space, it is hard for them to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Depression can be the result. Though it may be hard for them to accept in this state, they need to move through a stage of agitation by being more active - physically and emotionally.
A Kapha type’s depression is unlike a Vata- or Pitta-type depression, where fears of moving or a frustration from failings can dominate. In the case of a Kapha-type depression, there is just a feeling of being stuck, with seemingly no way to move forward. Initially, the inert stage can be debilitating for Kapha types. Even getting out of bed can be a mammoth task. Once a Kapha type can get moving in some form or another, the slow process of transformation can begin.
An agitated state may result in an expression of anger that may not be comfortable for them express (Mars is debilitated in the water-dominant sign Cancer). However, they must move through this stage to move into a balanced and loving state. One must accept and let go of old hurts and disappointments to move into a more naturally loving space.
Kapha types have more stamina than any other type because of their ability to store energy. This may be expressed as an accumulation of fat, for example, but once they realize their staying power, they can be encouraged gently to move through a more agitated stage, ultimately reaching a more peaceful and light stage of balance.
Kapha is expressed at a stage of balance as a feeling of love and devotion. They are the most loyal and affectionate of types, so this natural tendency can find a safe home in a more balanced state and, if there are no distractions or obstructions in their life, they are usually very loving, contented individuals.
The buoyancy of Jupiter, the pleasures of Venus and the social full Moon, all contribute to a sense of happiness and comfort when in balance.
