Life Stages
The water humour is dominant in the early, formative part of life when we build up our body's mass. Our bodies have a higher percentage of water when younger. The fire humour is dominant in the middle part of life from adolescence onward when our outward drive and ambition come into play. The air humour is dominant in the later stage of life when our bodies start to lose their flexibility and mass as old age sets in with a drying effect taking place. We have less percentage of water when we age so this must be considered when exercising, and allowances need to be made when there is less lubrication.
Natural Planetary Cycles
The natural 'planetary cycles' begin with the 1st year of life and the Moon's influence. It is in this formative year of life that we bond with the mother (or not) and this has a profound effect on our entire experience of life.
The next two years are governed by Mars; up to the age of 3, and it is here that we develop our individual needs separate to our mother as we begin to express our individuality.
Mercury governs the period of life from the age of 3 until 12 years of age. This is when we learn most of what we have to learn in life that carries us through this life experience in a practical manner.
Venus governs the period of life from 12 until 32. It is at this stage that we initially experience puberty and subsequently develop relationships beyond this into adulthood.
The Jupiter period is from the ages of 32 until 50. This period is concerned with the household, raising children and pursuing the things one loves to create.
After the age of 50 until the age of 75, we experience our golden years, which is represented by the Sun.
The last stage of our life, after the age of 75 until we die, is represented by Saturn, as we begin to recede from life.
These are the natural time cycles in all of our lives and we each experience them uniquely, depending on our experience of each of these planets – according to their strength and position in our horoscopes. We also experience planetary periods that are calculated for each horoscope.
Seasons
The air humour accumulates in summer and is aggravated in autumn and early winter. During the autumn, the drying effect in nature aggravates air and those of an air-dominant constitution will feel this more than other types. This will express itself as rigidity in the body and emotions, as the cold winds begin to distort the body into uncomfortable shapes, not allowing emotions to move through the body as easily. The body can hunch over in order to keep warm in the colder months and we feel the effect of this on a mental/emotional level, not just in the physical body. Heat will relieve such conditions, but moisture is needed also. Oiling the body with warm oils at this time of year will relieve much of this aggravation. Staying wrapped up and warm, especially when it is cold and windy outside, will help to address the increase of dryness in nature. Follow the balancing air guidelines explained in Chapter 2 in order to address any imbalances, especially if you are an air type.
The fire humour accumulates in spring and is aggravated in the summer. The summer months can aggravate a fire type by overheating them and making them impatient and angry. Whether this anger is expressed outwardly or not is another matter. This heat can lead to all kinds of inflammatory conditions. Cooling down with cooling oils and meditation will help alleviate these conditions, as will laughter, which can relieve the stressful build-up of heat.
The water humour accumulates in winter and is aggravated in the spring. This increases phlegmatic conditions over the winter months, and once spring comes along, the build-up of heaviness and coldness begins to melt as it meets with the heat of summer. This heating is initially aggravating to the water humour and is observable in springtime in many suffering from all kinds of congestive disorders. This is also because we react to the cold of winter by storing up on heavy, comforting foods at that time of year. In order to address this in a daily routine, you could exercise with balancing water in mind – accentuating cleanses in order to allow the excess water to move up and out. Excesses of the water humour need to move up to move out as these excesses are felt mostly in the upper part of the body in the stomach, chest, throat and head. An excess of air and fire needs to be released by moving it down and out. This can be achieved through cleansing the lower parts of the body.
Time of Day
The fire humour is related to the Day and is more prominent at noon and midnight. The water humour is related to the Night and the hours before midday and midnight. The air humour is related to the transitions between Day and Night, i.e., dusk and dawn.

Divisions of the Day
The Sun rules the Day and the Moon rules the Night. Although this might seem obvious due to the Sun's prominence during the day and the Moon's prominence at night, certain approaches to living – when certain lifestyles are taken into account – can leave some out of sync within these natural cycles. This out of sync approach is apart from the fact that many are more productive at different times of the day. This pattern of productivity will be reflected in each individual’s unique nature.
Air and fire types find it easier to get going first thing in the morning if they are in balance. Water types find it challenging to start the day with any great enthusiasm, but have more endurance throughout the day if they are in balance. There is a natural sense for all of us in how best to approach life on a daily basis. Metabolism is divided into solar and lunar phases each day as 'catabolic' hormones break down molecules in order to release energy during the day and 'anabolic' hormones build molecules at night in order to repair the body after the exertions of the day.
